The series was redeveloped after James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-CEOs of DC Studios, shifting from Greg Berlanti's original space opera concept to an Earth-based detective story inspired by True Detective and Slow Horses.
Kyle Chandler's portrayal of Hal Jordan was inspired by the 1990s Green Lantern comics by Pat Broderick, featuring an older Jordan with white streaks of hair, and the production team created 20 designs for the Green Lantern suit before finalizing a grounded, muted green jacket aesthetic.
The series premiered with 9.3 million viewers worldwide in its first three days, becoming the biggest premiere for a DC Studios series on HBO Max and ranking among the five biggest series launches in HBO Max history.
