The show is the official Hindi version of the British format Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and premiered on 3 July 2000, becoming one of the first shows to take Star Plus to prominence and reinventing actor Amitabh Bachchan's career.
Danny Boyle's 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire was loosely based on the show, with the host character based on Amitabh Bachchan portrayed by Anil Kapoor instead.
